Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) - a subspecies within a group of hinge-shelled
turtles, normally called box turtles.  T.c. carolina is native to an eastern part of the United States.
Occasionally, it is referred to as the Common Box Turtle to distinguish it from the other five
subspecies of eastern box turtles.  The earliest known turtles date from 215 million years ago,
making turtles one of the oldest reptile groups and a more ancient group than lizards and snakes.
About 300 species are alive today, and some are highly endangered.
