John B. Byrne Memorial Tower.  This stone observation
tower at the summit of Wayah Bald (5,342 ft) was built
in 1937 and renovated in 1983.  Byrne was the supervisor
of the Nantahala National Forest who first proposed the
route of the Appalachian Trail in this area.  Wayah is
Cherokee for "wolf".
