Josh Wakefield's Guest Book (other entries)

My son Kevin had open heart surgery at the age of 3 months. He will be 16 in August and has done great all these years. He just went for a check up and we found out that he is probably going to have another surgery at the end of the summer. I pray that we have a GREAT doctor like Pacifico.. Please keep Kevin in your prayers..

In 1982, I was an Open Heart Recovery nurse working at the University of MD. In April 1982, I gave birth to a son Eric, born with Transportation of the Great Vessels. The surgeons at U of MD did not have good success with TGA. Since I am an RN I was looking for the best surgical team especially since my son surgery was needed in July. I was blessed to have been referred to Dr. Albert Pacifico--he saved Eric's life!!! Eric is now 24yo- Eagle Scout, graduated from the University of MD and just opened his own restaurant in our home town of Mount Airy, MD. I have felt blessed everyday because Dr. Pacifico saved my son!! How can that be put into words? Once again THANK'S DOC!!!

I am stunned at the news of Dr. Pacifico's retirement.  I had no idea. My daughter has had 2 heart surgeries at UAB. She is scheduled for a check up again this year in June.

Dr. P was only 65 and did so love his work.  Does anybody know why he retired so early?  He can't be replaced.  I am so sad.

Dr. P performed my surgery years and years ago when I was 2. I am now 26 and would love the chance to thank the man who saved my life. I hear that he is retired now and just was curios on what was the best way to contact him. My name is Cathy Anders and he repaired the tetralogy of fallot damage to my heart. He was very much before his time and probably still is. All I want is to give him is thanks - it is the least i can do.

I was amazed to find your site this evening, Josh. To shorten a very long story, my cardiologist in Tallahassee recommended Dr. Kirklin to me in the late '70s. He in turn recommended Dr. Pacifico to replace my aortic valve, which he did in 1980 with a porcine valve (my preference rather than a mechanical valve). He predicted that it would last about 7 years, given the preservation techniques at the time, but it lasted for 13. Dr. P. took the time to send a very thoughtful response to an anniversary card I sent him in 1990, but I then lost touch. My second surgery, in 1993, was a Ross Procedure with Delos Cosgrove at the Cleveland Clinic. Both folks can walk on water, imho. A new hobby is running marathons, with the first two under my belt this year, so I'm thinking of going to B'ham in February to run the 1/2 marathon, and have a bit of a reunion with the area. Any info out there on if Dr. P is still in town and, even better, how to contact him?

Hello Josh, I accidentally came across your page and saw the acclaim of Dr. Albert Pacifico.  My wife Martha was one of Dr Pacifico's early patients. He did a mitral and aortic valve replacement Sept. 9-1972.  The type valves then used in the aortic position were breaking down, Dr. Pacifico contacted Martha to return to UAB to have the aortic valve replaced. He did so Jan. 1976.  Then in July of 1996, he repaired the tricuspid valve.  On Dec. 1-2004, I knew whom I wanted to perform my heart surgery. I was admitted to UAB Nov. 29,04 , On Dec.1-04, my 80th birthday, Dr. Pacifico replaced my aortic valve and did three by-passes. Martha began having blood leakage in the tricuspid valve and was admitted again to UAB where Dr. Pacifico placed a St. Jude valve in the tricuspid position. This last surgery of Martha was schedule earlier than she wanted but since Dr. Pacifico was retiring June 30th, she had him schedule it April 29,06.  So, we have been with Dr. Pacifico almost all of his tenure at UAB. Just prior to Martha's first surgery in 1972, Dr. Pacifico had, the previous week performed heart surgery on Milton Stone of "Gunsmoke".  Some have said that Dr. Pacifico is "God" this is not so, but he has put to great use the talent that God gave him. Martha and I are both alive today because of his great talent.

Hi Josh,
I happened to google Dr. Pacifico's name and your page came up. I worked as one of Dr. Pacifico's nurse practitioners for ten years. I am so glad that I got to work with such a great surgeon. All of CV surgery at UAB is saddened by his retirement. I was really glad to read all your entries.

In 1984 I was fortunate to spend a weeks study leave observing the work of Albert Pacifico.  I can honestly say that I have never seen such a brilliant surgeon and man.  I wish him a very long and happy retirement.  My surgeon at that time used Pacifico's techniques from those early days and I'm glad to see she is now working at UAB.  A great asset.  Her name is Roxanne McKay; another great surgeon, Good Luck to her.

Dr. Pacifico saved my little girl's life 12 years ago this week.  I too hold him with the highest regard.  As we enter into another series of medical test, I am saddened that he is no longer available to be our surgeon.  He is missed not only by his staff and peers, but by many patients.

Josh,
I came across your site when I Googled Dr. Pacifico. I worked with him as one of his scrub nurses in the OR for 20 years at UAB. I am sure you are aware that he retired at the end of June. It was such an honor to work alongside him and to read about one of his patients made me so proud. You truly benefitted from who I feel is the best in the world at what he does (did) :( It is hard to keep going to work knowing that he won't be there!
God bless!

Many years ago, I interviewed a candidate from UAB for our Neurosurgical program here at Baylor.  Since I had had my first triple bypass at UAB, I inquired as to who had taken Dr. Kouchoukos' place.  This resident candidate described an experience he had while watching Dr. Pacifico performing a coronary artery bypass.  Dr. Pacifico had started the first anastomosis at which point a med student asked our resident candidate a brief question.  When he turned back to watch Dr. Pacifico, he noted he was already through with the 2nd vessal!  When I needed a repeat triple bypass, I called Dr. Pacifico and he graciously offered to take care of me.  When I arrived on a Saturday nikght at UAB, I had begun to experience angina at rest for the first time.  I reluctantly awakened Dr. Pacifico who admitted me that night and performed the bypass as an emergency Sunday morning.  That was 13 years ago.  Currently at the age of 73 I play tennis twice a week and work out regularly.  For me, he is a hero -- a brilliant technician, an exemplary surgeon who literally gave me life.  I shall always be grateful.

Dear Josh,
Back in 1984 my daughter was sent to UAB at the time we had no idea what was wrong with our daughter. She was only 3 weeks old. Dr. Pacifico found she had constricted aorta, partial anomalous pulmonary venous return, and a bicuspid aortic valve. During that year he repaired 2 of the 3 and was a wonderful physician. She is now or will be 22 February 4 and is doing great. I only hated to hear of his retirement due to the fact she still has to have a valve replacement. I feel confident in the doctors she has now. To me he helped bring her this far. God blessed him with a great mind, heart, and wonderful set of hands.

As odd as this may sound but Dr. Pacifico is considered our family heart surgeon.  He preformed surgery on my niece Nov. 1992.  He also preformed surgery on my son twice Sept. 1999 and July 2002.  I am blown away with his compassion and sincerity.  The fact that he tells you like it is and leaves with every question you might have answered. HE is just the greatest!!!!

Josh: Thanks for the opportunity to add a comment on your web page. Like many before me, my statement concerns Dr. Albert Pacifico. Steve Martin in the movie, "LEAP OF FAITH", speaks of the GENUINE ARTICLE. That term accurately describes Dr. Pacifico as a physician and as a human being. There is no hype nor pretentiousness in this man. He is talented in the extreme and caring without limit. There is no way to adequately thank someone who literally saved your life. He is a hero to me and my family. May God bless and keep him. He is a national treasure. Vic Donati McComb, Mississippi

Dear Josh I am writing to you to let you know of my family's own experience with Dr. Pacifico about 3years ago. Our precious daughter, Sydni, was born with AV Canal defect and needed to be repaired ASAP. So in September of 2002 we went to UAB to get ready for what was one of the most scary times in our lives. We met Dr. Pacifico in the CV Nursery and knew immediately he was the man for us! Sydni's surgery was, in Dr. Pacifico's words, would take approximately 3 hrs. So when the time came to take Sydni to the OR we let her go with many tears and hopes. We went to Sugery waiting area to prepare for a long wait. To our shock and pleasant surprise a phone call came in for us telling us that Dr. Pacifico was "closing Sydni up" after only 1 1/2 hrs.! She remained in the hospital four days after surgery with 2 VISITS from Dr. Pacifico! We hear that is unheard of! So today Sydni is doing so well that when she visited her cardiologist in December of 2004 he released her until she is 5 1/2! I sent a letter to Dr. Pacifico not to long ago telling him of her excellent progress. He told us she would be fine and she is . Included in the letter I sent one of the bible verses that meant so much to us during that difficult time. I want to share it with you, Psalms 92 verse 4: For thou, Lord, hast made me glad through thy work: I will triumph in the works of thy hands. May God Bless you and you family.

Paula, Art and Sydni Young.

Our 86 year old father had 4 bypasses performed by Dr. Pacifico this week. After being told that he would NOT survive any surgery whatsoever (told this at another local hospital where he was in their CICU) and that his chances of even leaving the hospital were very slim, our nephew (who works in the Cath Lab at UAB) contacted Dr. Pacifico. He said to transfer him to UAB and that he would do the needed surgery. As of this morning, four days after the bypasses, this great-grandfather of five is beginning his "laps" and is doing GREAT! What a miracle we were given for Christmas!

Josh,
I stumbled across your web site doing research on Dr.Pacifico.You are blessed to have such an interesting life.
My research has lead me to believe that Pacifico is not "arguably the best in the country" but possibly in the world. We are planning to travel to consult with him.
Have you heard of any doctors outside the country that may be comparable to his qualifications? If so and you have time
could you please let me know.

I would just like to add one more accolade to those of Dr. Albert Pacifico. He performed an aortic valve replacement on me in 1998. I did considerable research before deciding who to use and where to go for the surgery. I had previously had two prior AVR replacements, one in 1969 and one in 1977. Dr. John Kirklin, who is now retired from surgery performed the 1969 valve replacement. What amazed me about Dr. Pacifico is not only his surgical competence but his ability to perform the surgery (valve replacement) in the shortest period of time. Time is very critical because the less time one is on by-pass the less neurological damage is incurred. Dr. Pacifico's skill and speed was instumental in my not only surviving but surviving with the least adverse impact (sie effects). I highly recomment Dr. Pacifico for any cardiovascular surgery. Sincerely, William Murray

Dear Josh, Amidst all the garbage out there on the Internet, imagine my surprise of finding your web page and the information on Dr. Albert Pacifico. My wife and I had been doing a national search for heart surgeons that were unique and very specialized, as I have an extremely rare form of cancer called Merkel Cell carcinoma. Five years ago I had a malignant tumor removed from my right temple. Last September I had a malignant tumor removed from my brain. At the same time, I was diagnosed with a tumor inside my heart measuring approximately .5 in x 1.0 in. After 8 months of intensive chemotherapy and radiation, it appeared that the tumor in my heart was not decreasing. Every heart surgeon we talked to had no experience with the type and location of the tumor I had, but every one of them recommended we talk to Dr. Pacifico at UAB. That's when I ran into your web page. It so impressed me that my wife and I flew to Birmingham that weekend to meet Dr. Pacifico and discuss the possibility of surgery. I have never met anyone who struck me the way Dr. Pacifico did. He, too, had no experience with the type and location of my tumor, but after some research on his end, he got back to us and let us know he could perform the necessary surgery. On 9/4/97, Dr. Pacifico removed my so-called "non-removable" tumor and I'm home in Chicago. Dr. Pacifico removed a "lemon-size" tumor that very soon would have had major effects on my heart. I'm writing this email to you to let you know your "People I Admire" page was extremely influential to me and I wanted to thank you. Dr. Albert Pacifico truly is one of the most unselfish men I have ever met. He has a gift that probably no other man has. As far as I'm concerned, Dr. Albert Pacifico is God.

You are right on about the pseudoscience. I'm sure you've visited the skeptics pages. I also liked your list of superior books. I was/am working on one similar to Carl Sagan's "Demon-Haunted World" when he passed. I still am adding to it. Congratulations on your site. Gus

I normally don't sign guestbooks. In fact, I don't spend more than five minutes at anyones personal page. This really Rocks. Keep up the good work, Josh.
